The Project AWARE Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet - one dive at a time. Project AWARE is a non-profit, worldwide, organization dedicated to "Conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and action." The foundation was established in 1995 by PADI (the Professional Association of Diving Instructors) in response to growing concerns by some scuba divers about potential harm inflicted on coral reefs by recreational and commercial water activities.
Over the years Project AWARE have sponsored many regular events such as beach and reef cleaning, coral monitoring and Donate as You Dive campaigns. They continue to monitor and report on the state of the marine environment and lobby governments for greater action on preservation and conservation efforts.
Over the past two decades of underwater conservation Project AWARE has learned that divers are true leaders in ocean protection. Divers are ocean heroes numbering in the millions across the globe. Together our actions will make a huge impact and will help to rescue the ocean.
With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change.
A major relaunch of the Foundation in 2011 found Project AWARE focusing in on two major ocean issues - Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, or rubbish in our ocean. While conservation issues abound on our ocean planet, the foundation is concentrating on these two serious problems where scuba divers are uniquely positioned to directly and positively affect real, long-term change.
Why not join the movement to protect our oceans by joining Project AWARE today?
